Comptroller General of Customs Advocates Stronger Collaboration with Armed Forces to Combat Smuggling

In a significant development, Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC) Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR has proposed intensified cooperation between the Nigeria Customs Service and the armed forces to counteract smuggling activities. The pivotal meeting, held on Thursday, 30 November 2023, at the Customs Headquarters in Abuja, underscored the critical role of collaborative efforts in bolstering national security.
CGC Adeniyi lauded the existing partnerships, emphasizing the commitment of the Nigeria Customs Service to collaboration, innovation, and consultations in the face of global challenges. Stressing the strength derived from unity, he stated, "We stand stronger when we work together."
Reflecting on past collaborations with the Defense Headquarters, CGC Adeniyi highlighted the support received in capacity building, joint operations, and training exercises. He expressed the Customs Service's dedication to exploring innovative solutions, leveraging technology, and working closely with other government agencies.
The Comptroller-General proposed an intensified joint exercise between the Customs Service and the military, advocating for unannounced frequent operations to act as a deterrent to criminals.
He underscored the importance of shared experiences in training, facilitating a better understanding of operational contexts. CGC Adeniyi expressed gratitude for the support provided by the armed forces, particularly in civil-military cooperation initiatives.
Addressing Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, CGC Adeniyi assured continued support, prioritizing clearing military consignments and participating in training programs. He affirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Customs Service to national security and proposed ongoing cooperation, dialogue, and joint exercises to ensure a collective and effective response to evolving security threats.
In response, General Musa expressed gratitude for the critical role played by the Nigeria Customs Service in the nation's security. He commended CGC Adeniyi for his leadership and dedication, recognizing the challenges faced by the country.
General Musa stressed the importance of interagency cooperation in tackling non-state actors and securing the nation. He highlighted the need for enhanced collaboration, training, and information sharing between the armed forces and customs to effectively address evolving security threats.
